Tropes

For this portrait series I was interested in looking deeper into the rhetoric and tropes of traditional portraiture stemming from the Renaissance: fine brushes, super-realism rendition, dark backgrounds and facial features in sharp focus and detailed. I interrupted each of these tropes purposefully, creating paintings that borderline on the abstract.  My argument is to ask whether or not these portraits are still identifiable and successful, and to question new tropes in portraiture being used in the twenty-first century.
